The fuction of TCDM relies on the strong biomedical research on BioCity Turku research groups. BioCity Turku is an umbrella organization supporting and coordinating life science and molecular medicine related research in the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University, and is one of the leading biotechnology centers in Finland.
BioCity Turku includes six research programs:

- Diagnostics Program
- Biomaterials Program
- Centre for Reproductive and Developmental Medicine
In the area of disease modeling the special know-how include
- Hormonal diseases and cancer
- Diseases of the central nervous system
- Inflammatory diseases
- Infectious diseases
- Regenerative medicine and biomaterials
Turku area has also strong tradition in pharmaceutical industry, and about half of Finland's pharmaceutical and diagnostic industry is located in the Turku region.
