Osteoporosis models

Osteoporosis can be  induced in mice and rats by– Gonadectomy – Immobilization of a limb. Induction of osteoporosis takes approximately four weeks. The models are suitable for testing of various treatment modalities for osteoporosis and for measurement of physiological parameters during osteoporosis induction. The models can be induced in any rat or mouse strain desired. Detailed information: Qu et al., Endocrinology. 2000 Feb;141(2):809-20. OSTER-mice: OC-cre; ERα ΔOB/ΔOB mice. In these mice the estrogen receptor α is incativated in osteocalcin expressing osteoblasts and osteocytes. Loss of trabecular bone is evident in young female mice and emerges in males upon aging. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23073829 OSKAR-mice: OC-cre; AR ΔOB/ΔOB mice. In these mice the androgen is incativated in osteocalcin expressing osteoblasts and osteocytes.
